Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies Approved
The Chinese program of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages is pleased to announce a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies. The major was officially approved by the State Coordinating Board on July 24th, and students may now declare Chinese Studies as a major. Read more detailed information on program requirements »
New Scholarships announced
The Chinese Studies program would like to announce the creation of two new scholarships intended for undergraduates, to be awarded through the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The scholarships are intended for students focusing on East Asia or South Asia in the areas of language, culture, or history. Each scholarship will be $500. More details of the scholarships will be announced as they are available. Applications will start in January 2008, with the first scholarships taking effect for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Student Wins Scholarship
Mr. Matthew Borski, a student in our CHNS 1502 has received a full scholarship, HSK B Scholarship to study in Beijing University for six months in the fall.
This prestigious and highly competitive scholarship is sponsored by the Chinese government, the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. The scholarship provides full tuition, fees, medical insurance, room, board, textbooks, and monthly allowance to the student. Recipients may choose any university to study in China. The scholarship is given via the Education Section of Consulate General of PRC in Houston and the Chinese program at UH.

Two current students of Chinese from MCL, CLASS have received prestigious scholarship. Bryan Pawlic from CHNS 2302 won the first place of the final Chinese Speech and Art Performance Contest (Chinese Language Bridge project sponsored NOTCFL) in Beijing two days ago. Ninty five (95) students from 45 countries competed in Beijing in July, 2005. Before they came to Beijing, they all won first place in their own country. Bryant Pawlic won the first place at the Speech Contest at Greater Houston Area held at UH on March 21, 2005. The award for the first place carries a scholarship of 150,000.00 Yuan that provides the winner to study in China for 3 years. The winner can choose any university and any major in China. Bryan is a star in Beijing now. he has been interviewed by a famous CCTV program host. See pictures below.

Kojo Iddrissa, a student from CHNS 1502, has received the Taibei Scholarship 25,000.00 in June, 2005. He was nominated by the Mayor Office of Houston. After several rounds of competition with the candidates of the sister cities of Taibei in the USA, Kojo won the scholarship to do internship in Taibei.
