graduate advising in CLASS
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences has one of the largest graduate programs at the University of Houston. Our schools and departments offer doctoral degrees in seven disciplines: Economics, English, History, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and Spanish; and master’s degrees in fourteen: Anthropology, Art, Communication, Communication Disorders, Economics, English, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Spanish, and Theatre. The College also offers an interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies as a minor field option for graduate students.
For most students, your departmental advising staff and faculty advisors will be your major resource in the graduate programs. (Click here for a list of departmental advisors.) The College graduate advising staff is here to provide support to the departments. We also oversee things like certifications for graduation, the submission of dissertations and theses, and admission approvals. Ms. Anna Marchese is the College’s academic coordinator for graduate programs. She can help you and your department deal with procedural questions or problems that may arise. It is a good idea to stay on top of deadlines and requirements in order to move smoothly through your graduate program.
Below, you’ll find some key deadlines as well as links to helpful information and resources.

The application deadline is typically early in the semester so please check the date to apply on our website or on the University’s academic calendar page. If you apply by this deadline, no prior departmental approval is required. (It is, however, a good idea to inform your department and your advisor of your plans.)
